THE strongest of the supernatural creatures, the older a vampire is the stronger he is. Their sole weaknesses are sunlight and vervain but a spelled piece of jewelry and a slowly built up tolerance of vervain can solve that problem. A vampire is turned by dying with vampire blood in his system then, once resurrected, feeding on human blood to complete the transition. The very first vampires are called the Original Vampires and they are much stronger than regular vampires.
Nearly as strong as vampires when in their wolf form, werewolves are a vampire's mortal enemy. A single bite from a werewolf is fatal to a vampire and causes an extremely painful death. Forced to change every full moon into a wolf, a long and painful process that involves breaking every bone in their body, the werewolf gene is only triggered by killing SOMEONE.
Servants of Nature, witches are charged with keeping the balance between all things. They cannot perform all types of magic, and any attempt at a darker magic beyond Nature will result in their powers stripped away. A hatred for other supernatural creatures, especially vampires, has led to THEM being mistrusted by most supernatural creatures.
Werewolves that Klaus Mikaelson has changed into vampires as well, hybrids are blindly loyal to Klaus through their sire bond. They do not have to turn every full moon and can walk in the sunlight freely, however, they are not invincible and can be killed by beheading or ripping out their heart. Right now the only surviving hybrids are the Original Hybrid, Klaus Mikaelson, and newly turned Harley Marshall.
Created by a bite from an Alpha, most werewolves cannot become full wolves but merely gain wolfish features. However, there are a select few with the ability to become full wolves (Talia Hale, Laura Hale, and now Derek Hale). They can transform at will but they are forced to transform during the full moon when their bloodlust is at its peak. They are strongest in packs which are comprised of an Alpha and multiple Betas, lone wolves are called Omegas. (NOTE: Some do not take the form of a wolf (though that is the most common shape) since the animal reflects the inside. Ex: Malia Hale (were-coyote) and Kate Argent (were-jaguar).)
Humans who, aware of the supernatural world, began to hunt down and kill troublesome werewolves. They have a code of honor that they follow, no killing innocents or children though some are moving to have the code removed. Hunters are usually families who passed on their legacy with the males becoming soldiers and the females leaders due to the belief that men are too eager for violence and war to lead impartially.
Druids act as advisors, emissaries, to the werewolf packs. They have some certain special abilities and are aware of most of the supernatural creatures that live in and around Beacon Hills. Once a druid joins a werewolf pack, they become an advisor of sorts and a kind of ambassador between Their wolves and other wolf packs as well as between humans aware of them.
Banshees have the ability to predict death, though this power is unpredictable and usually happens on a subconscious level. They hear voices of a sort in their head that lead to the prediction of death, through varying means whether through a drawing, writing, noises, or even walking to the scene of the death. Banshees also have a loud and piercing scream that can be heard from miles away.
Werecats are either born from a werecat parent or are turned by an alpha like werewolves. Typically when a person is bitten by one, the species of cat they turn into depends on their personality. Sometmes an alpha werecat, depending on their age, can shift into full big cats but usually will only have only cat like features.
A hunter is a being, usually a human, who hunts down the supernatural and saves people from monsters, demons, ghosts and other creatures. Usually they were introduced to the supernatural through violent or traumatic circumstances. They learned to fight and kill the supernatural creatures of the world to protect HUMANS and innocent people.
Angels are celestial beings created by God. They are winged spirits native to Heaven, imbued with holy white light. Their true form is nothing less of holy righteous beasts, ranging from two to six feathered wings, four animalistic heads, and can be as tall as skyscrapers. As warriors of God, Angels are extremely powerful beings in the supernatural world. Their true spiritual forms or visages prove overwhelming to most mortals, however, some special people can view their true visages without suffering lasting effects. Angels are difficult to kill. The most common way is by stabbing him or her with an angelic blade. It seems that the angel must be stabbed in a vital area of the human body, such as the head, heart, neck, or stomach. When an angel is stabbed by an angelic blade, a burst of bright, white light is released and angel wings are burned on the surface underneath the body of the angel's human vessel.
Demons are malevolent spiritual entities created by Lucifer. Created from corrupted human souls after extensive torture in Hell, by Alastair and other demons they become corrupted and extremely evil, and also very powerful. The species as a whole functions as the series' primary antagonists and are the most recurring creatures in the series. Demons are the result of human souls going to Hell and being tortured until no humanity is left in them, thus turning into demons - dark, malicious spirits that revel in pain, chaos, and death. A Devil's Trap will hold a demon in place and prevent its escape. The Trap will also prevent low-level demons from using their powers, though Castiel's Enochian circle was able to completely bind even Alastair's abilities. It also locks a demon inside its host unless it is exorcized. Demons are unable to cross a line of salt and can do very little to damage the line at all. They can't even open doors lined with salt if opening it would break the line. Salt can also be used to torture demons by making them ingest it or by injecting them with salt-water. Holy Water burns demons that come into contact with it, like acid. Exorcism will pull the demon out of its host and send it to Hell. Hosts may not survive. A knife known to belong to Ruby will kill a demon that is within a host if the wound dealt is a fatal one. The Colt, much like Ruby's Knife, it will kill any demon that is shot while within a host if the shot is a fatal one. It is more powerful, however, as it affects upper level demons.
